Jack and Tom are two young welders who share their time between Act Fast, and Youth Engineering. This is helping them gain different experiences, qualities, skills, and qualifications, which will be vital as they start to plan for their futures.
Youth Engineering employs two young workers in Jack and Tom who work as fabrication and welding operatives. Jack and Tom are also in part-time education with Act Fast and are working towards an ABC Level 1 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies.
Act Fast is a well-established Independent School near Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire. They operate a bespoke curriculum which is both written and delivered in-house, and work with young people who are disaffected or disengaged from mainstream education.
Youth Engineering’s flexible approach has enabled Jack and Tom to work with YES on a part-time basis and learn new skills in a real-life manufacturing environment, whilst studying towards qualifications with Act Fast.
Chris Quilter, Factory Manager for Youth Engineering is part of a team responsible for the development of both Jack and Tom and commented “Both Jack and Tom have shown a fantastic attitude since joining the team. They are enthusiastic about welding and really enjoy it and have come a long way in such a short amount of time; I’m excited to see how far they can go”.
Youth Engineering has been a very rewarding experience for Tom. “I hope that when I achieve my qualification with Act Fast, I can work with YES full-time. I enjoy welding and want to take my skills to the next level.”
Like Tom, Jack shares the same ambition to work for YES after he has gained his qualification with Act Fast. “I like welding because it is much more hands on and I’m looking forward to doing it full-time – I want to keep pushing myself to see how far I can go”.
Steve Baxter, Head of Curriculum for Act Fast oversees the development of students including Jack and Tom, only had positives to say about them. “Thomas joined the school at the end of 2020 and has proven himself a polite and positive student, as well as making good progress in Motor Vehicle Studies where he has shown a real flair for bodywork and fabrication” Steve explains.
“Jack joined Act Fast on a part-time basis and since then, he has flourished in his chosen interests of riding motocross and Motor Vehicle Studies. He has an excellent work ethic and likes to be busy. Jack is a keen motocross and pit-bike rider and recently finished 3rd in his class demonstrating his commitment to things he enjoys”.
Youth Engineering takes a unique approach to providing training and qualification opportunities in engineering, for individuals who are unsure of their career path. Flexibility through personalised training allows young individuals to work with Youth Engineering whilst studying with external entities.
It is an exciting time for both Jack and Tom who are working hard to achieve qualifications and gaining real-life manufacturing experience in the process. This opens plenty of doors, and we’re extremely proud of what they have achieved so far.
